A Style and Lifestyle Blog by Me, MM

So how does one even start these things?  As I tap the keys, I can’t help but think "will my dialogue be as vulnerable and progressive as Carrie? Or as cheeky and scandalous as Gossip Girl?", but then I remember; I’m a regular girl far from the concrete jungle. I curse, and I don’t check for grammar

So, I'll start here. This is MM, Margaret Miller.  I am not special.  And when I say this, I mean it in a sincere way.  Nothing about me isn’t something that is unattainable.  Whether it be in the fashion sense or the life sense.  Social Media can create a sense of the ideal life; but in reality, that portrayal isn’t even achievable by the person creating the content.  My goal is to alleviate those feelings and create a community that finds humor in the life that doesn’t go the perfect way.

This is why we created the Playbooks; we have our plans, but as the day progresses, we find that using the dry erase marker was a good idea. In these Playbooks, I will guide you through some styles that trend, but I will also guide you through getting through life with a lot more laughs than you expected. Que the sarcasm and the epic mess of life.

Thanksgiving Day in a Nutshell

So now that Halloween is over, we move on to the next holiday.. the one where we have to look like we have even more of our shit together. Halloween, a holiday where we throw two big ass bags of snickers in the cart and move on. Thanksgiving is the minor leagues. Step. Up. Our. Game. So we begin wandering around the food store, wondering where they hide the damn mini marshmallows for cousin Sue because she likes her yams with the “white gold gooiness.” And then, after 67 ingredients for a side dish, we now check out; where recently I have discovered, we all now have part time jobs as checkout and bagger attendants. WHAT? All of this is just the pregame to this daunting meal folks, thank goodness Wegmans has their whole middle of the grocery store dedicated to three aisles of alcohol. Praise Be.  In my first Playbook, I am going to cover what to wear this holiday.

What to Wear This Thanksgiving

Odds are you have heard the saying “time is fleeting.”  Who the hell said this? Not a woman. I feel it’s a classy way of saying waaaayyyy too much shit-waaaayyyy too little time. So I want to help with the “what do I wear” scenario.  We all have, let’s say “interesting” holidays where we all have different roles and different places to attend.  I am going to offer outfit suggestions to help depending on the what you're doing this Thanksgiving, and where you'll be.

How to Dress as a Thanksgiving Guest

Thanksgiving guests, you are first! and may I say very lucky to have someone else do the dirty work! If you pick up one word from this excerpt for you it is “LAYER.”  You don't know if Aunt Cynthia keeps her house at a cool 67 because of her consistent hot flashes, or like me;  your husband’s grandmother is preparing us for the fiery pits of hell with her blazing wood fire place (not sure if the sweat is from the heat, or the anxiety of one of my children failing in).

Dress in Layers this Holiday Season Ladies!

I would do a nice blouse top, with minimal sleeve detail to allow an easy pull on of a soft suede moto jacket. Make sure to choose one that is flexible, and can move for frequent of hugging. On holidays, I stay away from leggings and sweats as a guest. I pick a clean denim with that flexible stretch.  I keep my shoes to a heeled bootie because I’m not doing shit so I should at least look respectable. If you do a nice legging and tunic, I know you are coming to do damage and I feel that. Pour some extra gravy on that for me.

What to Wear as a Thanksgiving Host

Now if I was the host…

You just made a home-cooked savory meal for 20+ people, you get to wear whatever the hell you want with NO judgement. I am here to say you can wear a big sweatshirt with leggings, and no shoes if that guarantees me a hot plate full of turkey and mash potatoes with gravy. But seriously, you do not have to look amazing and perfect because your efforts are reserved for serving others!

However, if I can add a tip my mom always did and some of you may already do it: if Thanksgiving starts at 1:00 my mom would have everything ready by 12 keeping warm and she would disappear upstairs and do her face and hair while my dad waited to the last minute to vacuum before my grandparents would arrive at 12:30… yes every holiday my grandparents didn’t respect boundaries and showed up early and they would expect scotch in hand by 12:35.  My mom would come down looking like she had not put the turkey in at 5am this morning, and more like the Stepford wife (but far from acting like one).

If you don’t have kids - enjoy the beauty of taking your time; getting dressed, getting to the car, getting to eat the hot meal.  Again, enjoy.  For those of you who have kids; they are cute even if they are not in matching sets, or not in a gobble to you wobble shirt. They ARE CUTE, not the clothes.Try to just enjoy them as they shovel in the corn, (later they might ask you why you see it again.. I've been there, yikes.)

Along with enjoying the dinner and the kids, don’t forget to enjoy yourself and where you are in life.

Sometimes as rushed as holiday tasks are, the holidays themselves can force us to reflect on where we have been, where we are, and where we are going (most of the time crazy).  Feel good about yourself, you’re doing good, your doing your best and be grateful for yourself because YOU are the key to your happiness. Don’t forget to thank yourself for all that you have been able to achieve this year and give yourself some gratitude.

I hope your Holiday is as sweet as the light brown sugar I eat while I make sweet potatoes.

Now unbutton that top button on your jeans, and dig in.
